SEOUL December 13 (Yonhap) -- To South Korean musical actor Jun Sung-hwa freedom fighter An Jung-geun is inseparable to one another.
Throughout the South Korean musical movie “Hero” about An Jung-geun, actor Jung Sung-hwa has been acting out the protagonist An Jung-geun since 2009 when the original musical first premiered on to the stage.
Actor Jung Sung-hwa who participated in an interview at a cafe near Jongno, Seoul adressed “It is an honor that i can reenact the life of a honorable person An Jung-geun.”
“As I worked on the production of the musical I have been more conscience of my actions, therefore i looked at my past to check whether I’ve done something bad in the past” adding “Personally I think An Jung-geun was an amazing leader. Though he faced failures, however he managed to overcome hardships and made it work in the end. Whenever I’m working in a production I think to myself that I should be more like him.” adressed actor Jung Sung-hwa throughout the interview.
South Korean musical movie “Hero” premiering on December 21, is a movie version of the original musical “Hero.”
According to the actor Jung Sung-hwa “Director Yoon Jae-kyun came to see the musical one day and addressed that it is sad to see such a great piece of work only take the stage as a musical, during the after party of the musical. Later on director re visited the musical and stated that it would be nice to make this musical into a movie.” However he did not expect himself as a lead role of the movie.
“There are a lot of actors who are very good at singing because a lot of musical actors and actresses have moved on from the stages of musical to movies. However one day I received a call asking me to drop by at his office, later one when I visited the place, he printed me out a scenario. I was bit scared that I might harm the image of such heroic character, therefore I put everything I had into the production so that I can proudly say that I have given everything.” addressed actor throughout the interview.
There is a behind story of Actor Jung Sung-hwa losing over 14 kg for the role. “When the director specifically asked ‘I hope you could lose some weight to a point where everyone who sees you on screen will easily say, oh he is An Jung-geun,’ therefore I dropped my weight from 86 kg to 77 kg within a month. Due to severe weight loss I fainted during my musical performance but thankfully due to the wire I had on I was not injured.” addressed actor Jung Sung-hwa during the interview conducted about the upcoming musical movie “Hero.”
When asked about the biggest difference between the movie and the musical actor stated “Unlike the musical where we act out the scene in a grand place, during the production of the movie we had to act in front of the camera, therefore we focused on the small little details,” adding “The biggest goal on set was to make sure the music and all the singings are well mixed with the lines to a point where singing sounded like the lines.”
The process of realistic enactment was helped by the director throughout the production.
“Director said ‘I am not familiar with musical music. Therefore I want you to help me understand.’ When I heard him say that I knew he really cares of his production and knows how to be real because without a hesitation he admits what he knows and what he doesn’t, also within the production sight he worked very hard to communicate with the actors for better production.” stated actor Jung Sung-hwa throughout the interview.
Jung Sung-hwa known for his musical performances, first appeared on to the television as a comedian in 1994. After couple roles as supporting actor throughout sitcoms he switched his line of appearance to musical stages.
“When trying something new the most important thing is to persuade the audience that I have the potential for success,” adding “By appearing in ‘Hero’ I wanted to wipe clean of the doubts that I might not make it as a movie actor from audiences mind.” actor Jung Sung-hwa carefully addressed throughout the interview.
Most importantly actor showcased his ambition to open up the trend of musical movie through the upcoming musical movie “Hero.“
“I hope by showcasing the success of the upcoming musical movie ‘Hero’ the global market for musical movies will be widely open. I know it would be nice to have a successful run of the movie to a point where all my ambition and dreams could come true, however, I hope that through this movie that potential scenario could come true.” actor Jung Sung-hwa stated throughout the interview.
