'Prince of Asia' Lee Kwang-soo, appointed as honorary ambassador for the Year of Mekong-ROK Exchange

SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Yonhap) -- Actor Lee Kwang-soo, also known as the “Prince of Asia” (translated) for his huge popularity in the Asian regions, has been appointed as the honorary ambassador for the 2021~2022 “The Year of Mekong-ROK (Republic Of Korea) Exchange” (translated).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a ceremony of the appointment and presented Lee with a letter of appointment at the Government Complex Seoul on the 20th.

The Year of Mekong-ROK was designated to celebrate the 10th anniversary since the beginning of the cooperation between the ministers’ representing Korea and the 5 countries around the Mekong River, Laos, Burma, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in 2011.

Lee is a highly popular Hallyu star in the South-East Asia through SBS variety show, “Running Man.” Considering his fame in the Asian regions, Lee was selected for PR ambassador for the event, the Ministry of Foreign Affair explained.

“Lee’s activities will be the bridge for the people of Korea and the 5 Mekong countries to take interest in the Year of Mekong-ROK event and to build trust and friendship,” said Choi Jong-moon 2nd Vice Minster of Foreign Affairs.

“Personally when I think of South-East Asia, I have a lot of friendly and thankful memories. Being appointed as the embassy carries is so meaningful. I will show good actions and try my best as an honorary ambassador for more interaction and cooperation,” said Lee.
