SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Yonhap) -- The much-anticipated teaser for Mickey 17, director Bong Joon-ho's first film since Parasite (2019), was released on the 18th. Warner Bros. also shared a special teaser with Korean subtitles for local audiences.

Mickey 17, based on the sci-fi novel Mickey 7 by American author Edward Ashton, tells the story of a cloned human sent to colonize an ice-covered planet. The teaser opens with the protagonist Mickey (played by Robert Pattinson), who is shown as an "Expendable," a clone who dies and is repeatedly reborn.

Lines like, "It's going to be an extreme job" and "You have to get used to dying" hint at the dangerous and fatal nature of Mickey's mission.

Scenes where Mickey's hand is severed and floats in space, or his body is thrown into an incinerator, convey an eerie tone with Bong Joon-ho's signature dark humor. The title Mickey 17 refers to Mickey's 17th life after repeated deaths. In one striking scene, Mickey is horrified to encounter Mickey 18, a clone identical to himself.

The teaser also features thrilling moments with alien creatures stampeding across the icy planet like buffalo. Korean-American actor Steven Yeun plays Mickey's friend, Naomi Ackie stars as Mickey's girlfriend, and Mark Ruffalo appears as the commander of the colonization team.

Mickey 17 is set to premiere worldwide on January 30 next year, with a special early release in South Korea on January 28, coinciding with the Lunar New Year holiday.
