SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- "While filming 'Wonderland,' I realized how much I enjoy acting. It was the first time I felt that this is something I truly love," said Suzy, the lead actress in Kim Tae-yong's film 'Wonderland,' during an interview at a café in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 4th.

The movie, which opens on the 5th, depicts various people reuniting with their loved ones through 'Wonderland,' an AI video call service that resurrects deceased individuals. Suzy introduced the film as "a story about each person's way of coping with separation."

In 'Wonderland,' Suzy plays Jeong-in, a flight attendant who recreates her unconscious boyfriend Tae-joo (played by Park Bo-gum) as an AI in the virtual world. She soothes her longing by spending time with AI Tae-joo through video calls, but faces confusion when the real Tae-joo awakens and appears different from the AI version.

"Some might see Jeong-in as selfish for bringing Tae-joo back as an AI even though he's not dead," Suzy reflected. "But I tried to understand Jeong-in's choice and felt sympathy for her."

She added, "If Wonderland existed in real life, I think I would give it a try too. But eventually, I believe I would reach a point where I could accept and handle the separation."

Suzy and Park Bo-gum, who have shared the stage as MCs at the Baeksang Arts Awards in recent years, acted together for the first time in this film. They immersed themselves in their roles by imagining the backstories of Jeong-in and Tae-joo beyond the script. Director Kim incorporated their ideas into the film and captured their natural interactions on camera.

"I really liked Director Kim's 'Late Autumn,' and meeting him in person, I found him to be warm and communicative," Suzy said. "I think that warmth is well reflected in the movie."

Suzy also expressed a special fondness for this film because it was the first time she felt involved in the creative process of making a movie. "Usually, I stick closely to the script, but while filming 'Wonderland,' I learned to fill in the gaps of the script to understand the character better. Filming was genuinely fun, and I didn't struggle to express Jeong-in because I felt like I became her."

The film also features prominent actors such as Tang Wei, Jung Yu-mi, Choi Woo-shik, and Gong Yoo. Although Suzy primarily worked with Park Bo-gum and had little interaction with the other actors, she admired their performances and learned a lot from them. "It's still unbelievable and an honor to be in the same film as these actors. Watching their interpretations of the script taught me a lot," she recalled.

Having debuted as a member of the girl group Miss A before transitioning to acting in 2011, Suzy has recently appeared in various series like Coupang Play's 'Anna' and Netflix's 'Doona!' showcasing her versatility as an actress. This marks a significant departure from her earlier image as the 'nation's first love' from the film 'Architecture 101' (2012).

"I don't necessarily want to break the 'nation's first love' image, but I do prefer characters that allow me to show new sides of myself," Suzy explained. "Above all, I want to be an actor with authenticity. I hope my acting brings the character to life. I believe I'm gradually growing in this aspect. If I continue steadily, I trust that a significant growth moment will come one day."
