SEOUL, Sep. 16 (Yonhap) -- Actress Youn Yuh Jung, the first Korean winner of Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, has been selected as one of the 100 most influential people this year by TIME, American news magazine.
The actress has put her name on “The 100 Most Influential People of 2021” along with Korean-American actor and co-starrer in “Minari” Steven Yeon, the U.S president Joe Biden and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Tim Cook, according to TIME Magazine on the 15th.
Accordingly, two actors from “Minari” has put up their names on the list. Youn and Steven Yeon were selected for ‘titans’ and ‘artists,’ respectively.
Youn won the award for the Best Actress in a Supporting role at the 93rd Academy Awards in April for her role as Sun-ja in the film “Minari.” She was the first Korean actress to win the award in 64 years after the first Asian winner, Umeki Miyoshi in “Sayonara” (1957).
The actress has not only won the Academy Awards but also won 42 awards at major film festivals around the world including Screen Actors Guild Awards and British Academy Film Awards. Her 56 years of unique and unrivaled actress career has been recognized internationally.
“I have hardly met anyone as confident as Youn. I think that confidence comes from somewhere deep,” said Steven Yeun, co-starrer in “Minari” for the recommendation speech on Time.
“I just did my job and I received such generous praises for that this year. I am astonished at having been selected in the 100 people as well. I hope that I have given positive effects and consider it such an honor to having put my name in the list with figures much more magnificent than I,” said the actress about the news of the selection.
Time has been making a list of “The 100 Most Influential People” every year since 2004.
