SEOUL, Apr. 18 (Yonhap) -- The Korean Cultural Center New York is gearing up to co-host diverse summer performance programs with the city’s Lincoln Center, this branch of South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism confirmed Monday.
“K-Indie Music Night” is scheduled to be held on July 19, followed by “K-Pop Silent Disco” which will be held for two days from the next day. These two K-pop programs will highlight the Korean Culture and Arts Special Festival, which the Lincoln Center will organize under the title of “Korean Arts Week.”
The Indie Music Night will feature the highly acclaimed first-generation Korean punk band Crying Nut, which is best known for hit songs including “Run the Horse” and “Late at Night,” as well as the iconic indie rock band Say Sue Me. Crying Nut, in particular, is often credited as being a pioneer of Korean punk and indie rock scenes. These two representative bands will be performing at the outdoor concert hall of the Lincoln Center’s Damroch Park.
In the meantime, for the next two days, from July 20 to 21, an ironically muted disco will be opened at the Center’s Josh Robertson Plaza, where participants will be listening and dancing to K-pop songs while wearing wireless headphones.
The Center’s Korean Arts Week, which touts itself as a representative program of its summer festival “Summer for the City,” introduces itself as a weekly special event showcasing a slew of Korean cultures, including traditional and creative music performances, orchestra performances, movie screenings, DJ dance programs, and programs for children and family. This year’s Korean Week is scheduled to be held from July 19 to 23.
Kim Cheon-soo, head of the Korean Cultural Center New York, said, “The Center’s events to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Korea-U.S. alliance is anticipated to serve as an unrivaled opportunity to strengthen the two nation’s future political relations through K-culture.”
