SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Yonhap) -- Two South Koreans are named as 'The Breakout Stars of 2021,' by the New York Times.
Lee Jung-jae, the leading actor of the globally successful Netflix series 'Squid Game,' was chosen as the breakout star in the television section, according to NYT, Friday.
"Lee Jung-jae pulled off Seong Gi-hun, a gambling addict who is in deep debt, in a wrenching and surprisingly subtle performance," said the New York Times. "Lee doesn’t play Gi-hun as a hero or a villain, a bumbling fool or a savvy con man," added the daily news.
NYT introduced Lee as a "model-turned-actor who has starred in several hit Korean films," and quoted a line the actor said in an interview, "Gi-hun’s emotions are very complicated. Squid Game is not a show about survival games. It’s about people."
Kim Eun-sun, a music director of San Francisco Opera, has been selected as the rising star of the classical music industry.
Kim, a music director of the second-largest music opera company in the United States, took office in August.
Director Kim is the first female director and the first Asian to take on this role of a major opera company.
NYT shared a quote of Kim, "It’s a hard job, it’s a big job, whether you’re a woman or a man, I want to be seen just as a conductor."
"Kim is aiming to broaden the art form’s appeal in the digital age. Advertisements are featuring her image with the words, ‘A new era begins’ around San Francisco," said the NYT.
