SEOUL, Oct. 1 (Yonhap) -- Arirang TV announced Friday that it will discuss the point factors behind the popularity of Korean dramas, including Netflix's original series "Squid Game," which is creating an unprecedented sensation, on the TV program "The Point," which will air on Saturday.
Seo Dong-il, Country manager of Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners, and Jason Bescher Bass, a special professor at Soongsil Cyber University's Department of Entertainment and Arts Management, will appear as special guests and join episode No.162, which is titled "S. Korea's soft power through Squid Game's worldwide success."
Colette Balmain, professor at Kingston University in England, who also joined the discussion, praised "Squid Game" as one of the best Korean dramas to come out this year, saying the drama is being watched by both K-drama fans and those who are not interested in it.
Regarding the secret behind the popularity of "Squid Game," special professor Bescher Bass broke down the reasons and said that the drama captures Korean parts like "Parasite" but also tells a simple story that can be relatable worldwide.
Professor Bescher Bass then evaluated the current situation in the local content market as "Netflix considers S. Korea as an important market and is capable of making entertaining shows," but voiced concern, saying, "There is a potential danger that a (Netflix's) bubble might burst."
Seo also mentioned that Netflix played a big role in the box office success of "Squid Game." "Small producers can work with global OTTs to raise their reputation," Seo said adding, "But if you don't have your own IP (Intellectual Property) that has been sold to Netflix Original, then at the end of the day you'll be just making a production house--making a small portion of the revenue."
The episode will air on Arirang TV at 4pm on Oct. 2.
