SEOUL, July 26 (Yonhap) -- First series of SF action movie ‘Alienoid,’ directed by Choi Dong-hoon, surpassed 1 million admissions a week after its release, announced movie distributor CJ ENM on Tuesday.

'Alienoid' added 4,000 more moviegoers on the day to the previous day's cumulative total of 996,000 spectators.

‘Alienoid’ was No.1 at the daily box office in the country for 6 days after its release on July 20, but hollywood animation “Minions 2” is catching up quick. “Minion 2,” which was released on the same day, has cumulative viewers of 913,000.

A red light for the movie’s success was on when ‘Alienoid,’ first runner of Korea’s four megaflick, showed weak performance in the beginning. Upcoming film “Hansan” about Yi Sun-sin is topping ‘Alienoid’ in current ticket sales. “Emergency Declaration” starring Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun and “Hunt” starring Lee Jung-jae are hitting Korean screens next month on Aug. 3 and Aug. 10 respectively.

Director Choi’s previous films “Assasination” (2015) and “The Thieves”(2012), which both opened at the end of Sep. and surpassed cumulative viewers of 12 million, recorded 3 million viewers on the first weekend of release, becoming box office hits.

Production budget for the first series of ‘Alienoid’ is 33 billion won and break-even point is around 7 million viewers. The sequel, which was filmed simultaneously, is to be released next year.
