SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Yonhap) -- Paintings by modern ink-and-wash painting master Park Dae sung will be displayed in U.S. Ivy League schools.

According to Art history professor at Dartmouth Sunglim Kim, Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College will open an exhibition "Park Dae sung: Ink Reimagined" from Sept. 24, 2022 to March 19, 2023 including very large-scale brush and ink paintings by this Korean contemporary artist.

There will be 23 paintings including "snowy scene of Geumgang " and "Luncheonette Falls" displayed at the exhibition, and it will be the largest solo museum exhibition of the artist's work ever to be presented in the U.S., and many works will be shown for the first time in the U.S.

The Korea Institute of Harvard University will also hold an exhibition "Park Dae Sung: Ink and Soul" from Sept. 19 to Dec. 8, 2022.

13 works of the artist will be displayed at exhibition by Korea Institute of Harvard, which marks its 41st anniversary.

Painter Park, who keeps real landscape painting in existence, lost his parents and left arm in the Korean War, but is evaluated to have achieved an unrivaled style of painting by devoting himself to Korean painting.

Works of Park, known as one of the favorite painters of the late Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee, were included in the "Lee Kun-hee Collection" and were also hung in the reception room for the 2018 inter-Korean summit.

There is much attention that the artist, who held overseas exhibitions in Germany, Kazakhstan, and Los Angeles this year, is spreading "Hanllyu art" through this exhibition at Ivy League where best prestigious private institutions in U.S. are gathered.

Professor Kim, who curated both Harvard and Dartmouth College exhibitions, said in a phone interview with Yonhap News, "Hanllyu was mainly known in the U.S for its pop culture such as movies, dramas, and popular music, but now Americans are becoming interested in Korean traditions and history," adding, "Painter park continues Korea's long tradition of ink-and-wash painting while combining with modern style."

She also said, "Painter Park uses the traditional media of ink painting while also utilizing completely modern and large scale styles, presenting Korean paintings without being outdated in the eyes of foreigners. It is also highly competitive in overseas."

An English book written by six people, including Professor Kim, and sponsored by Korea Arts Management Service and Gana Foundation for Arts and Culture will be published for the first time in the U.S., and Park will visit the U.S. from late October to early November to demonstrate Korean painting and calligraphy at Ava Gallery in New Hampshire.

Artist Park will be at the Hood Museum in person to give a special art lecture on Nov. 3. There will also be a full-day symposium about Korean contemporary art, co-organized by Dartmouth, the Korea Foundation, and the MMCA on Nov. 4.

In partnership with the Hood Museum, other institutions will present related exhibitions: the Charles B. Wang Center, Stony Brook University, Park Dae Sung: Ink Reimagined (Sept. 14 to Dec. 10, 2023); and the University of Mary Washington, Park Dae Sung: Ink Reimagined (Oct. 26 to Dec. 10, 2023).
