SEOUL, April 6 (Yonhap) -- Actor Kim Min-Kyu (28) is currently garnering much attention as he portrays a sweet and romantic character in the SBS Monday-Tuesday drama, "A Business Proposal."
"It's not easy to be fun while being childish, but it seems to have received a lot of love because it is a drama that can be enjoyed comfortably in both the viewers' eyes and mind" said Kim Min-kyu, on the 1st, in an interview at a cafe in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, ahead of the drama "A Business Proposal" coming to an end.
"A Business Proposal" is a work depicting the story of an ordinary food researcher, Shin Ha-ri (Kim Se-jeong), who meets Kang Tae-mu (Ahn Hyo-seop), the CEO of her company at a blind date that she went instead of her friend.
Kim Min-kyu plays the role of Cha Sung-hun, Kang Tae-mu's secretary. Although he is the so-called "second male lead" along with Seol In-ah, the "second female lead" who plays the role of Jin Yeong-seo, who Cha Sung-Hoon falls in love with, they have attracted as much as attention as the lead couple Kim Se-jeong and Ahn Hyo-seop.
While Tae-mu and Ha-ri couple portrays a lively, eccentric relationship, Sung-hun and Yeong-seo shows a sweet yet mature romance, allowing the viewers to relate with their relationship.
"I think there were many things that viewers, who are tired of their social life and their dating life by those in their late 20s were able to relate." Kim Min-kyu said. "It shows a comparatively more mature relationship when compared to Tae-mu and Ha-ri."
In dramas based on web novels and webtoons, cartoon-like settings and embarrassing lines tend to appear. Kim Min-kyu too confessed that he had a hard time trying to make these scenes as naturally as possible.
Some of his main lines include, "I can't break up with you, Yeong-seo" when Sung-hun gets drunk or "I will make you never forget me" which he said before kissing Yeong-seo.
"There were cringey lines, and I was worried how I would be able to make these lines look romantic without making it sound too cheesy." Kim Min-kyu said. "So I was satisfied when I saw that the scene didn't come out too cheesy, and was grateful that the viewers enjoyed it."
Kim Min-kyu especially stole the hearts of the female viewers by wearing glasses in the drama. He was even labelled as "Handsome man with the glasses," and many online shopping malls began selling similar designs to the glasses he wears with the name "Kim Min-kyu glasses."
Kim Min-kyu laughed and said, "One of the most memorable reaction was a comment that said, 'A man that made history with glasses'."
Although Kim Min-kyu started his acting career with a small role in 2013 and continued to appear in several dramas, he was not familiar to the public. Thus, "A Business Proposal" is a drama that allowed him to be familiar by the public.
"I've played a lot of minor roles and I think those times and those characters allowed me to meet the character 'Cha Sung-hun' of 'Business proposal'" he said. "I'm mostly on the positive side so I didn't really get too stressed out (because people didn't recognize me)."
When asked if he felt his popularity these days, he answered, "I think I do know it in my head, but I don't really feel it." He added, "When I look at the reactions of those around me and the number of followers on my social media, I do think that the drama have worked out well, but I haven't really felt the popularity as much as I don't go out due to the pandemic."
Kim Min-kyu who wants to become a "Mitt-bo-bae (an actor who can be trusted with his acting and drama) said, "I want to be an actor that the viewers can cry and laugh with."
