SEOUL, Apr. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actress Jeon Jong-seo, also known as Rachel Jun, has confirmed to star in a brand-new action period series that is scheduled to be released next year.
Jeon has been slated to star as the female lead of the Korean-based online streaming service TVING’s original series “Queen U” (romanized title), which is expected to be available for national viewing in 2024.
In this series, Jeon will suit up as Queen U-hee, a Goguryeo queen consort who unexpectedly becomes the target of princes fighting for the throne as well as five tribes seeking power after the sudden death of the King. The series will follow the story of the Queen, who marries one of her deceased husband’s younger siblings only to protect her family and tribe.
Set in the Goguryeo period, this series will be based on the historical record of Queen U, or romanized as Queen Woo, who is reportedly known as a queen consort of Goguryeo as the wife of King Gogukcheon and later his younger brother. Her records tell a rare story of a queen consort maintaining her power by marrying the deceased husband’s sibling.
This period series will mark Jeon’s very first period series as well as the first-ever original period series of the streaming service.
Jeon was formerly invited to the Cannes International Film Festival with her screen debut film “Burning” (2018) and also to this year’s Cannes International Series Festival with the TVING original dystopian series “Bargain,” which she co-starred with veteran actor Jin Sun-kyu.
