20th Daejeo Tomato Festival to be held in April

SEOUL, Mar. 11 (Yonhap) -- The 20th Busan Daejeo Tomato Festival will be welcoming visitors for two days from Apr. 1.

The Festival will be held in three days after being postponed in the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Gangseo District in the city of Busan confirmed Saturday.

Under the theme of “Happy Companion of Tomatoes and Flowers,” the festival will showcase various performances, participatory experiences, and exhibitions for participants to enjoy all together. Diverse events using tomatoes will be held, including a walking competition while studying tomato ecology and cooking a huge bowl of spaghetti, as well as participating in tomato auctions and qualifications.

The Daejeo Toamto Festival Promotion Committee has already organized free tasting events, spots where visitors can directly purchase fresh tomatoes, and a food market so that participants can purchase while tasting Daejo tomatoes.

Daejeo Tomato, also known as Salty Tomato, is in its best taste and quality from March to May. This special kind of tomato touts higher sugar content than regular tomatoes, and it also has its unique sour and salty taste.

As of last year, a whopping 14,000 tons of Daejeo tomatoes were harvested in 450 farms. The type was named Geographical Indication No. 86 in 2012 and has since been captivating the taste buds in Korea for its unique taste and value.
