SEOUL, July 29 (Yonhap) -- The world's largest rock festival “2022 Lollapalooza,” held every summer in Chicago, opened on Thursday. (U.S. time)

The entrance of Grant Park, a grande park in the downtown of Chicago and where the event is held, was crowded with rock enthusiasts from all around the world lined up from early in the morning to wait for the gate to open, Chicago media announced.

Chicago abc program also said fans have lined up since 2 a.m. to occupy good spots to watch popular band “Metallica” perform at 8:15 p.m.

The festival began at Thursday noon and for the next four days from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., about 170 teams will perform at a total of 8 stages, which Lake Michigan and Chicago skyscrapers are in the background.

On the last day, July 31, at 9 p.m., BTS’s J-HOPE will perform at the main stage until 10 p.m.

When Lollapalooza announced 2022 lineup early last month, they said, “J-HOPE is the first Korean artist ever to get on the main stage as the headliner at U.S.’s main music festival.”

Rock Stars such as Metallica and Green Day and artists like Dua Lipa, Lil Baby, Machine Gun Kelly, J.Cole, Kygo, and Jazmine Sullivan perform as headliners.

Lollapalooza is a mega event more than 100 thousand people gather in a day.

There are worrying concerns regarding the security as it has not been a month since the shooting incident happened at the Independence Day Parade in Highland Park, a suburb north of Chicago .

But Chico police said, “ We have taken all the necessary measures to safely hold Lollapalooza.”

Lollapalooza began in 1991 with the motto “Alternative cultural festival.”

The festival was held all over the U.S in the past, but since 2005, it is held in Chicago every year.
