SEOUL, Nov. 9 (Yonhap) -- Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who created a global sensation with the smash-hit Netflix series "Squid Game," was selected as the winner at the 11th Artist of the Year Awards.

The Shin Young Kyun Arts and Culture Foundation announced Tuesday that it has decided to appoint director Hwang, Lee Chang-ho, Lee Jang-ho, and actor Jung Woo-jung, and independent film director Yoon Dan-bi as the recipients of the awards.

The judging committee evaluated director Hwang to have contributed to the development of video-making by successfully making "Squid Game" the world's most watched drama.

Meanwhile, director Lee was recognized for directing more than 20 films by 2014, founding the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, and training students at universities.

The Good People Artist award, which is given to artists who have shown exemplary activities of giving back to the community, will be given to Jung for raising public awareness on refugee crisis and providing humanitarian aid for people in need as the goodwill ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency. Director Yoon received favorable reviews at local and foreign film festivals for her debut film "Moving On."

As for the Theater Artist award category, the winners were not selected because many performances did not take place due to COVID-19.

The Artist of the Year Awards selects artists who have been recognized for their outstanding achievements in the film and theater industry throughout the year and gives a total of 100 million won in prize money and a plaque. The awards ceremony will be held at Myungbo Art Hall in Seoul on Nov. 18.
