SEOUL, Oct. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean rock singer Jeong Hong-il, has returned on Friday with his new ballad song "The Memories That I Can't Reach." This is the first song released by Jeong after finishing as the runner-up on JTBC audition program "Sing Again."
"I have come to think a lot about the spectrum (of music)," Jeong Hong-il said through his agency Showplay Entertainment. "My goal is to become a vocalist who is not limited to only the rock genre."
"I wanted to create a new genre called "Jeong Hong-il's ballad. This genre is not a typical ballad as it has rock energy but is also not excessive."
Jeong mentioned that he would also like to play "real" rock music for his rock enthusiast fans if he later had a chance.
"The Memories That I Can't Reach," was composed and produced by Choi Ye-geun, a fellow singer who Jeong was able to be acquainted with through "Sing Again." The song adds a dramatic atmosphere with a dreamy sound and allows Jeong's unique shouting sound to stand out in the second half.
"This song is like a short piece of memory passing by like a storm," Jeong said.
Jeong revealed that he wanted to release a song he had wrote and composed himself at first, however after hearing Choi's dream of wanting to become a producer, the two singers started working together.
After selecting the theme of "memory," the two decided to deliver a message of cherishing and reminiscing memories of the past in the song.
Jeong also received support from other contestants of "Sing Again." The winner of the show, Lee Seung-yoon, left a one line review saying, "the song will never fade away," while Lee Mu-jin, who was selected as one of the finalists, said "I got goosebumps and teary."
Debuting in 1998, Jeong, who has been a vocalist of the heavy metal band Barkhouse for a long time, stressed that he wants to be reborn as a musician without any restrains through "The Memories That I Can Reach."
"As a singer, I want to try various music and expand my scope. Whether it's heavy metal or popular music, I'm trying to open up my spectrum of music that I am able to pull off."
