SEOUL, Oct. 5 (Yonhap) -- Maestro Chung Myung-whun could not stop smiling when Lim Yunchan's elegant performance of "Emperor Concerto" ended.
Lim Yunchan performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5, known as the Emperor Concerto, with ONE KOREA ORCHESTRA led by Chung Myung-whun in the night of Wednesday.
This is the first time he played Emperor in domestic concert. Audiences held their breath as exquisite and elegant performance played out.
2,000 audiences who filled the Lotte Concert hall responded with applause and cheer as soon as the last movement ended, and Chung hugged Lim with a smiling face. ORCHESTRA who played beautiful harmony with Lim also had smiles on their faces.
ONE KOREA ORCHESTRA, established in 2017 for the SouthNorth Korea relations, is a project-like orchestra composed of domestic orchestra members as well as foreign players from Korea and conducted by global conductor Chung Myung-whun.
Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5, "Emperor" is a repertoire Chung enjoys playing with young pianists like Kim Sung-wook and Cho Seing-Jin. World class pianist Cho Seong-jin also played "Emperor" with ONE KOREA in 2017 to commemorate the first anniversary of opening of Lotte Concert hall.
Lim, receiving a series of curtain calls, played encores, Federico Mompou's Jeune filles au jardin and Scriabin. After Lim left, ONE KOREA played the Symphony No. 5 in C minor of Ludwig van Beethoven for the second part of the concert.
Lim Yunchan will re-play "Emperor" at Jeonnam University Minjumaru and Tongyeong International Music Festival on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, with Gwangju Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hong Sukwon.
Recording of live performance at Tongyeong on Saturday will be included in an album, which is to be released next month by Universal Music. This album is Lim's first live album after he won 16th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition .
The musician became a sensation in global classical world after taking the trophy at 16th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, held in Forth Worth in Texas last June, as the youngest winner (age 18) in the 60 year history. Van Cliburn International Piano competition is North America's representative piano competition, acknowledged as having the same authority as the Chopin Competition, the Tchaikovsky Competition, and the Queen Elizabeth Competition, which are the world's three major music competitions.
