[※ Editor’s Note: South Korean film industry has been undergoing rapid growth and changes over the past several decades. The tectonic shift in the industry has fostered a launch of an advanced service analyzing the moviegoers’ decision-making process and making individual and business-level recommendations by deploying big data and artificial intelligence (A.I.).
By operating the game-changing data and recommendation app “Maimovie” powered by Mycelebs, Yonhap News Agency’s K-Culture Planning Team will be releasing a series of content reviews on Korean-made films and drama series. SEOUL, Mar. 9 (Yonhap) -- “Content beyond the platform” is a phrase that implies that the platform on which content is streamed or broadcast no longer matters when it is well-made. The best archetype of content that goes beyond the platform would be “The Glory,” which will unveil the long-awaited second part on Friday. The vengeful original series, starring Song Hye-kyo, had many subscribers hold on to their Netflix accounts even when Netflix banned account sharing.
The main theme of “The Glory,” which has been receiving rave views and attention, is “revenge.” Some other keytalks related to Song’s revenge story that were extracted include: “Cold,” “Dry,” “Desperately struggling,” “Breathtaking,” “Playing with words,” and “Literary.” These were all related to the grappling actions that the main protagonist Moon Dong-eun takes to exact her thrilling revenge on her former bullies.
Among the keytalks, the keyword “Playing with words,” implying that each line of the script was compelling, speaks about the competence of the hit screenwriter Kim Eun-sook, who already made herself known by writing scripts for the hit television series “Lovers in Paris” and “Descendants of the Sun.”
“I might get beaten up, but I am a cheerful b*tch!” (said by the role of Kang Hyun-nam)
“Of course you have something to lose. Just one thing. Your life.” (Moon Dong-eun)
The keytalks that the AI-powered Maimovie gathered vividly reflect the public tastes and reviews: Keytalks such as “breath tightening” and “stirring up tension” reflect how domestic and international Netflix subscribers watched this fast-moving and breathtaking series with plotlines full of twists and turns.
In terms of global responses for this mega-hit revenge story, there were a whopping 2,130 keytalks that were gathered as of Mar. 1. Among them, the top 30 keytalks included keywords such as “piqued,” “feel cheated,” “unnecessarily violent,” and “constantly whining.”
As listed above, the series did receive some negative reactions for scenes realistically depicting the damages and harms caused by school violence. Some put their finger on how provocatively Moon exacts her revenge.
Some other keytalks, such as “stone-faced cast,” expressed viewers’ rising expectations of the certain cast and their splendid acting skills.
Based on such keytalks, it can be inferred that while the Korean watchers shared their reviews and thoughts on this original series in many different ways as much as they got immersed in Moon’s thrilling revenge story, the overseas watchers clearly evaluated the series from a more neutral stance.
