SEOUL, Feb. 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korean star director Park Chan-wook’s mega-hit romance thriller “Decision to Leave” raked in five gold medals at the 21st Director’s Cut Awards.
The annual Awards are presented by the Directors Guild of Korea (DGK), which is comprised of a group of around 300 filmmakers from Korea. The Awards selects nominees and winners through votes from Korean directors, which makes the ceremony to stand out from all the other existing film awards. The awards ceremony is also held informally, without any evening gowns or a red carpet.
The ceremony for this year was held at Chungmu Arts Center in Seoul on Friday, where Park’s “Decision to Leave” scored five total awards, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Park Hae-il), Best Actress (Tang Wei), and Best New Actor (Seo Hyun-woo).
The romance thriller, which marked Park’s first work in 6 years since his movie “The Handmaiden,” follows the story of detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) investigating a man’s death in the mountains eventually ending up meeting and developing feelings for the dead man’s mysterious wife (Tang Wei) in the course of his tenacious sleuthing.
Director Kim Se-in’s feature-length debut film “The Apartment with Two Women,” which depicts a mother-daughter relationship twisted by love and hatred, won Best Vision and Best New Actress (Yang Mal-bok).
In the meantime, director Ahn Tae-jin won Best New Director for his debut film “The Night Owl,” followed by director Daniel Kwan, who was in charge of delivering “Everything Everywhere All At Once” which received Oscars nominations in 11 different categories, won Best International Director.
For the series category, the Best Director award went to Yoon Jong-bin of Netflix’s original crime thriller “Narco-Saints,” as well as Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Jo Woo-jin), and Best New Actor (Kim Min-gwi).
