SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) -- Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama’s “State of Venus” was sold for 4.4 billion won at an auction on Feb. 22, according to Seoul Auction, Wednesday.
Yayoi Kusama’s “Statue of Venus Obliterated by Infinity Nets” is a rare work consisting of the artist’s representative painting “Infinity Nets” and a Venus sculpture covered with nets.
The artist failed to set a new record, despite the attention paid on whether the artist would break the highest price performance ever in Korea.
Yayoi Kusama's highest bid for a domestic auction was 5.45 billion won recorded by "Pumpkin" (1981) at the Seoul Auction in November last year.
As Seoul Auction's first major sale of the year, the total winning bid was about 17.3 billion won and the winning rate was 81%.
Kim Whan-ki’s “Moon and Plum Blossom” was sold for 860 million won and Park Soo-geun’s "Thatched House” (translated) was sold for 320 million won.
