SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- The King Sejong Institute, established by the South Korean government to teach the Korean language and culture to the worldwide public, will produce and air “Global Woorimal Battle,” the educational institute's foundation confirmed Thursday.

Korea Broadcasting System’s 20-year-long “Woorimal Battle” joined hands with the Institute for this special language competition, hoping it would give a positive fillip to those learning the language. This special event, which will be held at overseas institutes, is also anticipated to accelerate the spread of the Korean Wave.

From this month to July, the preliminary rounds will be consecutively held and recorded at King Sejong Institutes stationed in Paris, France; Cairo, Egypt; Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; and Los Angeles, the United States.

The winners and runners-up of the preliminary rounds will be granted prize money as well as a pass to the final round of the Global Woorimal Battle, which is scheduled to be held at KBS’ Seoul station in September.

The four final teams will be going against each other in the final round, showing off the Korean language skills that they have honed at the overseas institutes. The final winning team will be awarded 10 million-won-worth prize money.

All students learning the language at any King Sejong Institute around the world can apply online to participate in the preliminary round.

Each preliminary round will be aired every week from September 11, and the final round will then be specially aired on Hangeul Day (October 9), in celebration of the invention of the Korean alphabet.
