Block buster movie 'Avatar the Way of Water' exceeds 88 percent reservation rate

SEOUL December 14 (Yonhap) -- Global blockbuster movie “Avatar: The Way of Water” shortened as “Avatar 2” which is a sequel movie of Global phenomenon movie “Avatar” which swept the entire world with fame and popularity in 2009 has premiered in South Korea on Wednesday.

South Korea will be the first ever country to premiere the movie “Avatar 2.”

Despite of freezing cold weather near negative 20 degrees Celsius, theaters in Seoul were packed with audiences excited to see the movie “Avatar 2.”

As the time for the first screening of the movie “Avatar 2” got closer, audiences slowly gathered at the Imax theater located in CGV Yongsan to see the movie.

Majority of the people gathered up at the GGV Yongsan was there to be the first one to watch the movie “Avatar 2” at Imax Theater.

Audiences lined up at the Kiosk either to order popcorns, drinks for the movie or to print out their tickets. At the concession stand bells were ringing nonstop indicating orders are up showcasing how many people have gathered up at the theater.

Since the movie “Avatar 2” has screen time of over three hours some critics addressed the pressure of having drinks or food throughout the movie, however more than half of the audiences had either popcorns or drinks on their hand. Moreover some of the audiences took photos with posters in front of the theaters while waiting to see the movie.

One of the audiences who visited the theater was director Lee Byung-yoon, he addressed “I wanted to be at the first screening, because it has been one of the most waited movie for years,” adding “I already booked 5 more screenings, I will be seeing it at IMAX, Dolby cinema in COEX, and more.”

House wife Jung Mi-jin who visited the theater to see “Avatar 2” with his son addressed “My son wanted to see this movie so badly to a point where I called in the school so that my son could watch the movie on the day of its release.”

Moreover, the son Choi Yoon-hoo addressed “I woke up very early and got prepared at 7 in the morning to get here,” adding “The first movie was great however the second one will have even greater graphic, and it had such an amazing trailer, therefore I am very excited to see the movie.”

Based on the data collected in the morning of Wedesday, the reservation rate of “Avatar 2” scored 88.6 percent which accumulates to over 85 thousand audiences. “Avatar 2” manages to showcase great gap between South Korean movies being screened currently, such as “The Night Owl.”

"Avatar 2" features a new mixed-species family composed of former human Jake (Sam Worthington), Na'vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and three children living in the underwater world of Pandora and obstacles they face.

“Avatar 2” was directed by James Cameron who is known to make sequels even better.

Change in the environment from the mystical forest in the first part of the movie to a underwater habitat raised the hype of the “Avatar 2” due to the expectation that the second movie will feature more colorful and mystical environment.

Original movie “Avatar” which premiered in 2009, is successfully holding it’s place on top of the global box office with benefit of over 2.9 billion dollars.

When the movie “Avatar” was first released in 2009, it exceeded over 10 million audiences within only 38 days of its release, and in total, over 13 million audiences watched the movie placing “Avatar” on the 8th on the list of overall box office of South Korea with accumulated audiences.
