SEOUL, Dec. 9 (Yonhap) -- Chung Ki-hwan has won the presidential prize at the 50th Korea Traditional Craft Competition, the Korea Heritage Service and the National Intangible Heritage Functional Association announced Tuesday.
Chung received the top honor for his work, a jewelry box decorated with chrysanthemum patterns using the traditional mother-of-pearl inlay technique.
Mother-of-pearl inlay is a traditional craft method in which thinly cut pieces of abalone or shell are attached to lacquered wooden furniture to create decorative patterns, producing a luminous effect through the harmony of wood, lacquer and shell.
Chung was praised for the high level of craftsmanship achieved through his use of traditional joinery and lacquer techniques.
The prime minister’s prize went to Kim Chung-woon for his work "Geum Seodae," a gold-decorated belt inspired by the official belt worn by Joseon Dynasty officials.
The culture minister’s prize was awarded to Kim Hyun-joo for expressing ritual vessels through various embroidery techniques, while the administrator of the Korea Heritage Service prize went to Kim Sun-jung and Kim Moon-jung for their silver-inlaid folding screen depicting scholarly still-life scenes.

The award-winning works will be on display from Dec. 11 to 19 at the National Intangible Heritage Training Center in southern Seoul.
The annual competition is held to preserve and promote traditional Korean crafts. This year, 163 works were selected as winners from 339 submissions.
