SEOUL, Mar. 23 (Yonhap) -- The 17th Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF) will be held in Daegu from May 19 to June 5.
Both domestic and foreign works that have been officially invited will be brought to the stage along with creative works that have been produced with the support of the city. Additionally, diverse programs such as the College Student Musical Festival, Suseongmot Musical Fringe Festival, Musical Gala Concert, and DIMF Awards are also scheduled to be brought under the spotlight.
The British musical “9 to 5,” which received rave reviews for depicting relatively sensitive topics such as gender discrimination and absurdity in the workplace in a witty fashion, will open the stage.
The song “9 to 5,” which became the motif of the film and musical of the same name, is an iconic song of Dolly Parton, also dubbed the queen of American country music. Her song scored big worldwide by singing about the sorrows of office workers who work every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Filmmaker Patricia Lesnick and singer-songwriter Dolly Parton joined hands to create the musical “9 to 5,” which was first staged on Broadway in 2009. Along with the duo, Jeff Calhoun who is known to have directed smash-hit Broadway musicals “Jekyll and Hyde,” “Newsies,” and “High School Musical,” also joined as the director.
Bae Sung-hyuk, executive chairman of the Daegu International Musical Festival, said, “The musical which will open our Festival is undeniably the most anticipated work that we have invested more time and effort,” adding, “We are looking forward to the attention it will receive from the public.”
