SEOUL, Feb. 16 (Yonhap) -- Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (Ant-Man 3),” which sees the return of Paul Rudd’s subatomic superhero, topped the South Korean box office as soon as it hit the local box office.
The film, which marks the third film in Marvel’s Ant-Man trilogy and the first work of Marvel Studio of the year, attracted 174,000 admissions on Wednesday, dethroning the Japanese animated film “The First Slam Dunk” that has been securing first place for weeks.
Paul Rudd’s “Ant-Man 3,” dubbed the entry to Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, follows the story of Scott Lang, also known as Ant-Man, who is transported to the Quantamania and fights against Kang the Conqueror.
The sports animated film “The First Slam Dunk,” which sat in first place for 19 days, slid down to second and was followed by James Cameron’s return of “Titanic: 25th Anniversary,” which was re-released in a 4K 3D version.
“The First Slam Dunk,” which attracted moviegoers by stimulating nostalgia for the 30s and 40s, is on the verge of surpassing 3 million admissions with cumulative admission of 2,978 million as of Wednesday. An animated comedy “The Amazing Maurice,” which tells the story of the tale of a large talking cat Maurice, touched down in fourth place.
The Korean-based animated film “Duda and Dada: The Secret of HooHoo Island,” which features the story of Duda and her friends’ journey to HooHoo Island in search of memories of her mother, scored fifth.
