Pyeongchang International Peace Film Festival to discontinue after 4 years

SEOUL August 25 (Yonhap) -- Pyeongchang International Peace Film Festival·PIPFF will be discontinued after its fourth festival happening in 2022.


“Realistic problems such as insufficient amount of fun has lead to a decision to close down PyeongChang International Peace Film Festival” adding “To those who have participated and helped out with the festival, we would like to send our gratitude, it would not have been possible if it was not for you guys,” comity of Pyeongchang International Peace Film Festival stated. on Thursday.

Pyeongchang international Peace Film Festival which inherited the spirit of Pyeongchang winter Olympics in 2018 kicked off at the Pyeongchang Olympics Stadium in 2019.

The film festival was loved for showcasing movies with theme of peace, coexistence and prosperity

Unlike other festivals, through implementing strict regulations and fumigation Pyeongchang International Peace Film Festival managed to host its event successfully throughout the pandemic era.

Festival in 2022 will be held using funds in total of over 1.8 billion won worth of support fund provided by Pyeongchang city and the province government.

Purpose of shutting down the film festival has to do with usage of the funds in businesses closely related to those who live within the province.

According to the official of the Gangwon province, “We have informed the comity that it will be hard for us to fund the festival, after reciving the news, the comity decided to discontinue the Pyeongchang International Peace Film Festival” adding “Instead of investing in huge amount of fund in one event, we have decided to help out with people who are actually living in the province.”

Despite of discontinuation of the festival, Pyeongchang International Peace Film Festival planned for 2022 will be held as it is planned.

Throughout small theaters in Pyeongchang, Cheorwon, Yangyang, Yeongwol and more the film festival comity will be hosting a small version of the film exhibition through September until October.

Moreover, the comity will be hosting a Film exhibition in October with Chuncheon sustainable development council.

Film festival comity will be in place until December of 2022.
