SEOUL March 10 (Yonhap) -- Movie “Riceboy Sleeps” by South Korean director has been selected as the grand prize winner of the “Rogers Best Canadian Film Award.”
According to the TFCA which stands for Toronto Film Critics Association and Korean press stationed in Toronto Canada on Friday, members of the TFCA has selected “Riceboy Sleeps” by director Anthony Shim as the award winner of “Rogers Best Canadian Film Award.”
Actor Ethan Hwang who participated in the production of “Riceboy Sleeps” participated at the Gala dinner for the award ceremony and received the trophy and the prize money which is worth 100 thousand dollars, on behalf of the director Anthony Shim.
“Rogers Best Canadian Film Award” which is sponsored by one of Canada’s biggest mobile company Rogers is granted to those within the Canadian film industry, moreover the prize is considered one of the greatest achievements Canadian can receive.
Unlike other awards, “Rogers Best Canadian Film Award” is addressed at the gala.
“Toronto Film Critics Association” consists of various professional media personals who specializes in critics of movies within Toronto Canada.
“Riceboy Sleeps” depicts a story of single mom So-young acted by Choi Seung-yoon who immigrates from South Korea to Canada, with her son Dong-hyun acted by Ethan Hwang. The movie portrays director Anthony Shim’s personal anecdote.
The movie is about a boy who becomes more mature while struggling due to two very different South Korean and Canadian cultures. Due to the subject being handled throughout the movie, “Riceboy Sleeps” received the nickname of “Minari 2.”
The movie was shot in Vancouver and South Korea, and was first introduced in Busan International Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.
Director Anthony Shim was awarded with “Young Cineastes Award” at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January of 2023.
