SEOUL, May 31 (Yonhap) -- Hollywood’s blockbuster “Jurassic World: Dominion” (Jurassic World 3) will hit the theaters on June 1st and there is interest on whether the new movie will change the box office, which has been dominated by “The Roundup” for almost half a month.
“Jurassic World 3” presold 341,000 tickets on the 31st at 10 a.m., a day before its release, according to the Korean Film Council, Tuesday. The film recorded a reservation rate of 44.9% and outpaced the second-place "The Roundup" (25.1%).
The Jurassic series has been almost 30 years since the first movie "Jurassic Park" (1993) premiered, but it is still known to guarantee box office success. In recent works, “Jurassic World” recorded 5.54 million viewers in 2015, and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” in 2018 recorded 5.66 million total attendance.
“Jurassic World 3,” the sixth and final movie of the Jurassic series, is expected to evoke nostalgia for old fans by bringing back the old members including the main character Owen (Chris Pratt), Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), Alan Grant (Sam Neill), and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern).
“Jurassic World 3” will hit the theaters for the first time in the world in Korea on June 1st, 9 days earlier than in North America. The movie will be released on the local election holiday and is expected to lead the box office during the three-day Memorial Day golden week. The previous movie “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” was released on Memorial day in 2018 and attracted 1.18 million viewers on the first day alone.
Meanwhile, “The Roundup” which topped the box office every day since its release on the 18th, is expected to surpass the 6.88 million total attendance of its first movie “The Outlaws (2017).” The sequel to the 2017 comedy hit garnered 6.74 million audiences as of the previous day.
