SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Yonhap) -- CGV has unveiled the world’s first theater equipped with four-screen projection on Thursday, featuring screens on the front, sides, and ceiling.
Cho Jin-ho, head of CGV’s Domestic Business Division, introduced the 200-seat "Yongsan ScreenX Theater" at Yongsan I’Park Mall, stating, “We are embarking on another bold challenge with this innovative theater.”
The Yongsan ScreenX Theater expands upon the existing ScreenX format, which utilizes screens on three sides, by adding a ceiling screen for an even more immersive experience. CGV emphasized enhancing the core elements of cinema—screen, sound, and seating (3S)—to deliver the ultimate viewing environment.
For the first time in a domestic ScreenX theater, the Dolby Atmos system has been implemented. A total of 54 speakers installed within the screens deliver immersive and multidimensional audio. Recliner seats have been installed throughout the theater for comfortable viewing at the expanded screen angles.
The new theater will debut on the 24th with IU Concert: The Golden Hour. On February 21, it will screen the animated film The Master’s Book of Exorcism, based on the novel of the same name. Other offerings include short-form content like Unexpected Journey and Flow.
Oh Yoon-dong, head of CJ 4Dplex Studio, revealed that two Hollywood films are being prepared for release in the four-screen format, with plans to adapt major Korean films slated for production this year.
CJ 4Dplex, a CGV subsidiary, operates specialized theaters such as ScreenX, 4DX, and Ultra 4DX worldwide. As of late 2023, the company managed 423 ScreenX theaters across 46 countries and aims to increase this number to 540 in 2024 and 700 by 2025.
Despite a 10% decline in the global film market last year, ScreenX achieved 22% growth.
“Building on this quantitative and qualitative growth, we plan to present more works in the ScreenX format this year,” Oh added.
