SEOUL, Mar. 27 (Yonhap) -- The Gwangju Biennale Foundation has named Super Junior’s Choi Si-won, known mononymously as Siwon, as its face of the upcoming 14th Gwangju Biennale.

The Foundation has been appointing a celebrity who is at the forefront of leading the Korean Wave as its honorary ambassador.

The 36-year-old singer, who made a debut in 2005, has been widening his spectrum not only as a member of a boy band but also as an actor for more than 18 years. The singer-turned-actor is well-known for his sophisticated yet amicable character, which has been evaluated as a perfect match for the Gwangju Biennale which encompasses a wide range of audiences and aims for diversity.

Meanwhile, Super Junior has also been contributing to the spread of the Korean Wave by holding concerts all over Asia and South America since last year.

The Gwangju Biennale formerly appointed an array of mega-hit stars, including Jin-young (2018), Hyun Bin (2016), Jung Woo-sung (2014), Lee Byung-hun, and Im Soo-jung (2012), as its ambassadors who would give a welcoming fillip to the globalization of Korean art.

Choi said, “It is a great honor to be appointed as an ambassador for the Gwangju Biennale, which stands as one of Asia’s most prestigious art festivals,” adding, “I will put my utmost effort to promote Gwangju, the city of art, and our country Korea to the world.”

The Gwangju Biennale, which will be held at the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall as well as selected locations all around the city, is scheduled to be held from Apr. 7 to July 9 under the title of "Soft and Weak like Water."
