Why latecomer of OTT contents such as 'Bargain,' 'Shadow Detective' struggles to pursuit success

SEOUL November 07 (Yonhap) -- Latecomer of the over the top content provider in South Korean market, Tving and Disney +, are threatening the position of Netflix by showcasing various contents.

Tving and Disney + are showcasing thriller and mystery genre of programs such as “Bargain,” and “Shadow Detective” to compete against Netflix, however the critics are split into two. Audiences who enjoy the certain genre of contents are very excited for such releases, however the regular audiences are not as interested in such series.

According to the broadcast industry on Monday, Tving showcased their original series “Bargain’ which is based on the short film created by director Lee Choong-Hyun on October 28.

Series “Bargain” is a disaster thriller movie about organ smugglers who gets trapped inside the fallen building due to the earthquake. Protagonists who are very self centered and calculative who fight for their lives in a urgent situation.

Director Jun Woo-sung who was in charge of the production uses one take filming method every time he films in order to create the unique tension within the series. One of the key point to look out for throughout the series is the acting skills shown by individual actors who are capable of successfully filming scenes which lasts for 10 to 15 minutes.

Actor Jin Sun-kyu who acts out the character Hyungsoo who gets trapped inside the fallen building while engaging in prostitution with minor, Hyungsoo who runs around the building showcasing the raw emotion that the protagonist goes through with unique sense of humor.

Actress Jeon Jong-seo, who acts out the organ smuggler Park Joo-young who shows sudden personality changes from being a giggly teenager to a cold business woman who knows where the bread is buttered on. Also, Jang Ryul will act out the character Guk Ryeol who showcases insanity as the character gets cornered into extreme situations.

Disney + also showcased mystery detective series “Shadow Detective” on October 26. The series is about a detective who has been in the line of detective work for over 30 years under the pursuit to catch the anonymous person who threatens him and frames him of being a murder suspect by looking back at his past.

The overlying atmosphere of the series “Shadow Detective” revolves around the idea of Dejavu however, experienced actor Lee Sung-min acts out the protagonist character Kim Taek-rok which showcases charismatic detective and detailed emotional changes.

The series incorporates veteran detective with 30 years of work in the field of catching suspects get framed of being the murder suspect through fast paced development. The call detective receives from the unknown caller ID and the opposing structure created by both sides provides entertainment to its viewers.

Both “Bargain” and “Shadow Detective” are both well made series, however both of the series are struggling to attract viewers.

Gong Hwi-jeong, South Korean drama critic addressed “Drama series with specific genre show the distinctive difference between the good and bad, and show the process of revenge which is why a lot of people love such series within those genres, however, the movie and drama scene has been flooded with these type of series, therefore it has been too standardized. Therefore its seems to be over played.”

Professionals criticize on the aspect that unlike Netflix which showcases the entire season at once, other platforms are segmenting their releases which diversifies viewer’s interest.

Jung Duk-hyun pop culture critic stated “Both ‘Bargain’ and ‘Shadow Detective’ are very well made series with successful segmentation from those belong in the same category. However they are struggling to create synergy with other series.”

Moreover, critic addressed “Netflix is focus on preventing their subscribers from leaving the service, however Tving, Disney + and more are focused on attracting more subscribers, although it might be very convenient if showcasing new episodes every week attracts the audience, however in reality it is very hard to draw in new subscribers.”
