SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- Kooksoondang announced on the 4th that its product, "Baekseju" celebrated its 30th anniversary.
Since its launch in 1992, a total of 700 million bottles of Baekseju have been sold.
Kooksundang started the development of Baekseju with the aim of making a representative Korean alcohol that could be presented to foreign tourists, after the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
"Raw Rice Fermentation Method" was used to manufacture Baekseju. This is a method of using powdered raw rice and room temperature water without heating it until the alcohol is finished.
Kooksoondang explained that visiting businesses in outlying areas and conducting customized marketing accordingly played a big role for their popularity.
It enhanced the business by distributing posters with phrases like "Baekseju, a liquor that goes well with samgyetang," or "Baekseju, a liquor that goes well with eel," to have each areas of business drink their liquor.
Since 2008, "Seolgaengmi," Korea's first rice used exclusively for brewing has been delivered to local farmers and has been brewed into alcohol.
Recently, as the eco-friendly trend has been growing, transparent bottles with reduced environmental pollutants have been introduced.
"Baekseju is being exported to more than 50 countries, including China, the United States, and Japan, to promote South Korean alcohol to the world," said an official from Kooksoondang.
