SEOUL, Mar. 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Son Suk-ku will return to the theater stage for the first time in a long time with the soon-to-be-unveiled play “The Army on the Tree” (literal title).
Actors Son Suk-ku, Choi Hee-seo, Lee Do-yeop, and Kim Yong-joon have confirmed to star in the upcoming play, which will be put on the stage of LG Art Center Seoul from June 20 to Aug. 5, LG Art Center Seoul and producer MPN Company announced Tuesday.
The play will tell the true story of two soldiers who saved their lives by hiding in a tree for about two years without being told that Japan lost against the backdrop of Okinawa during the Pacific War in April 1945. The play induces the audience to ponder over questions about human nature and the true meaning of war by depicting the two soldiers who endure extreme conditions by holding on to their hope of auxiliary troops coming to rescue them.
Among the two soldiers, Son, who is best known for his lead roles in the television series “D.P.,” “My Liberation Notes,” and “Big Bet,” as well as the mega-hit film “The Roundup,” will play the newly enlisted soldier.
Son, who kicked off his acting career on the Daehak-ro theater stage before making his screen debut, will meet the audience on the theater stage for the first time in a while.
Along with Son, who recently plucked to stardom, veteran actors Lee Do-yeop and Kim Yong-joon will play the role of his superior who is more experience in war and combat. In the meantime, Choi Hee-seo, who made herself known by appearing in multiple films including “Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet” and “Anarchist from Colony,” has been slated to play the mysterious woman who protects the two soldiers.
Director Min Sae-rom, who is known for previously delivering the plays “On the Beat” and “Mending the Living,” will take the helm.
