BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) – S. Korean drama “Saimdang, Memoir of Colors,” starring Lee Young-ae, was aired on China IPTV(Internet TV) and local TV channels.

It is the first time in 6 years that Korean dramas have been aired on official drama broadcasting platforms in China, such as terrestrial TV channels or Internet TV.

The drama Saimdang dubbed in Chinese was uploaded on “Mango TV,” an IPTV channel of Hunan Television, on Jan. 4 evening, according to the Chinese entertainment media on Jan. 5.

Moreover, local broadcasting company “Hunan Entertainment,” an affiliate of Hunan Television, also started to broadcast the drama dubbed in Chinese from Tuesday.

Korean dramas could not be aired on official broadcasting platforms in China, such as Chinese terrestrial TV channels and Internet TV, in conflicts over THAAD since 2016.

Therefore, it has been an issue whether the ban will be abolished in drama category, following the movie “Oh! My Gran,” which was released in China last month for the first time in 6 years as a Korean film.

Mango TV purchased the copyright of the drama to plan the simulcast with Korea, but it could not be accomplished due to consequences of THAAD conflicts.

The Korean Cultural Center in China explained, "We completed the consideration of Chinese National Radio and Television Administration in November, 2016, shortly after the law of banning Korean culture in China was issued, but as the law was strengthened, we have not been able to continue broadcasting and online services. However, we launched the service simultaneously on Hunan Entertainment and online Mango TV this time.”
