SEOUL, Oct. 2 (Yonhap) -- An exhibition highlighting the traditional use of gobdol (soapstone) in preparing medicinal remedies with care and devotion is set to open.

To celebrate the 22nd Heo Jun Festival (October 12–13), the Heo Jun Museum in Gangseo, Seoul, announced on the 2nd that it will host the special exhibition Gobdol Onsim starting on the 4th of this month.

Gobdol, known for its resistance to burning even after prolonged boiling, was a popular material for making medical utensils such as medicine pots, braziers, and cauldrons. It is referenced in Heo Jun's renowned medical text Dongui Bogam, where it is noted that gobdol was finely ground and used in medicinal treatments.

The exhibition will display over 50 gobdol items, including medicine pots and cauldrons, as well as 14 photographs by Kim Young-il that capture the beauty of these items. Interviews with master gobdol craftsmen Park Dong-sik and Oh Chang-geun will also be featured.

Kim Chung-bae, director of the Heo Jun Museum, expressed hope that visitors would appreciate the meaning and beauty of gobdol, a practical yet affordable material repurposed for medical use.

The exhibition will run until March 16, 2024.
