SEOUL April 19 (Yonhap) -- Actress Bae Doo-na recently shared her thoughts on her role in "Rebel Moon: Part 2" during a meeting at the Community House Masil in Seoul.
Reflecting on the thrilling combat scenes of "Rebel Moon: Part 2," Bae Doo-na admitted, "Not long ago, I saw the fight scenes from 'Rebel Moon: Part 2' in the editing room and found myself exclaiming, 'Wow, that's awesome!' It's rare for me to react like that when watching my own scenes, as I'm usually quite critical of myself... But the combat scenes were just so impressive and engaging."
Directed by Zack Snyder, "Rebel Moon: Part 2," a science fiction fantasy, premiered on Netflix at 4 p.m. on the 19th.
Continuing the story from its first installment released in December last year, "Rebel Moon: Part 2" follows warrior Cora (played by Sophia Boutella), who unites fighters to resist the tyrannical ruler of the Mother World, Valisarius (portrayed by Frank Fee), engaging in intense battles.
Bae Doo-na portrays Nemesis, a warrior fighting alongside Cora. As the sole Asian member among Cora's companions, Nemesis dons traditional Korean attire with a unique look reminiscent of a kendo practitioner, wielding twin swords.
In addition to showcasing her exceptional swordsmanship in one-on-one combat with a giant spider monster in the first installment, Nemesis now confronts the Imperial army invading a peaceful settlement on the outskirts of the universe. Bae Doo-na underwent training in Filipino martial arts kali to prepare for her role as a swordswoman.
Describing "Rebel Moon: Part 2," Bae Doo-na remarked, "The story swiftly unfolds as it picks up the breadcrumbs laid out in the first part, revealing various characters' pasts while featuring numerous action-packed and emotionally stirring scenes."
The narrative also sheds light on Nemesis's painful past, having lost a child to the violence of the Imperial army. Bae Doo-na's dynamic action sequences are complemented by her poignant expressions, conveying deep emotions. She also shares a touching bond with a child in the settlement, showcasing a tender side amidst the chaos of battle.
Reflecting on her experience on set, Bae Doo-na revealed, "I'm usually quite lively on set, cracking jokes and all, but in front of the child actor, I tried to maintain a solemn demeanor like Nemesis to not disrupt their immersion in the role. After filming, the child even gave me a necklace as a gift, which I still wear to this day."
Bae Doo-na, known as a global star for her appearances in Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Air Doll" (2009) and "Broker" (2022), as well as the Wachowskis' "Cloud Atlas" (2012) and the American drama series "Sense8," emphasized her versatility in selecting roles across various genres and platforms.
Regarding her affinity with Netflix, where she has appeared in multiple original series including "Sense8," "Kingdom," and "The Silent Sea," Bae Doo-na stated, "I don't discriminate between films and dramas or platforms. If there's a good project with a director I admire, I'll go for it, regardless of the medium."
"Rebel Moon" director Zack Snyder, renowned for films like "300" (2007), "Man of Steel" (2013), and "Army of the Dead" (2021), received high praise from Bae Doo-na. Reflecting on her experience working with Snyder, she commended his remarkable visual depiction of alien planets and creatures.
Bae Doo-na concluded by expressing her desire to explore comedic roles, stating, "I recently watched the Netflix series 'Chicken High' and found it hilarious. I'd love to try my hand at genuinely funny comedy."
