SEOUL, April 23 (Yonhap) -- "Minari"'s Youn Yuh-jung held the Best Supporting Female award at the 36th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards on April 22nd (KST).
Youn Yuh-jung received the Best Supporting Female Award from the U.S. independent film industry three days before the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles (LA) on the 25th.
The votes from members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which select the Oscar winner, ended on the 20th, but Youn Yuh-jung is said to be one step closer to the Academy trophy by winning a trophy at the Independent Spirit Awards.
Youn Yuh-jung is the first Korean actress to be nominated in the Academy Award's Best Supporting Actress.
Earlier, Youn Yuh-jung won more than 30 awards, including supporting actress awards from the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).
"Youn Yuh-jung has solidified her position as a front-runner for best supporting actress," said Deadline, a Hollywood media outlet specializing in entertainment news.
Youn Yuh-jung gave the honor of winning the award to the production crew and cast members who co-produced the movie "Minari."
"Although we had no money and little time, we made it," Youn Yuh-jung said in her acceptance speech. "We got very close to each other during this time."
"(The place where we filmed "Minari") was not a luxurious place, so we stayed together in a trailer and really became a family there," she said. "I think we can be where we are today because of our director."
The actress called director Lee Issac Chung, who directed "Minari," as "our captain and my captain," and said, "Most of all, I'm really grateful for director Lee Issac Chung and our Minari family."
In addition to the Best Supporting Female award, "Minari" was nominated for Best Supporting Female, Best Director, and Best Male Lead at the ceremony, but unfortunately did not win.
The Best Feature and Best Director award went to Chloe Zhao's "Nomadland."
Riz Ahmed of "Sound of Metal" won the Best Male Lead award while Carey Mulligan of "Promising Young Woman" won the Best Female Lead award, respectively.
