SEOUL December 3 (Yonhap) -- Modern rock music with the background of year 1300 Japan emits throughout the scene.
Japanese traditional mask dance performance Nogaku looks similar to stages performed by pop stars, and the traditional instrument Loquat is played like an electronic guitar throughout the stage.
Musical animation film “Inu-Oh” directed by Masaaki Yuasa is about Nogaku performance which has historical importance to a point where it has been designated as one of the intangible cultural properties of Japan by UNESCO with mixture of modern musical performance.
“Due to the era difference some might have hard time understanding the storyline, however I hope the audience will have fun with the people from 600 years ago.” director Yuasa addressed throughout the press conference held after exclusive showing of the musical movie “Inu-Oh” at Lotte Cinema on December 2.
“People back in the days were not as different as we are now, and they all need someone to lean on to,” adding “Theme of the movie is to showcase the similarities between everyone from the past and those in the present.” addressed the director throughout the press conference.
Protagonist Inu-oh gets born as a freak due to a father figure who is blinded by his own greed towards art.
However Inu-oh roams around with dogs in the town calling himself “King of Dogs.”
Due to Inu-oh’s physical appearance a lot of people are scared by Inuo, however blinded musician who plays Loquat treats him like a normal friend, therefore they become very close friends.
Throughout the movie, both Inu-oh and the loquat player showcases unique unconventional ways of performance making names for themselves, as the performance continues, Inuo’s odd shapes return back to normal.
Director put emphasis on the purity of protagonist’s love towards art throughout the movie.
Director Yuasa addressed “Inuo truly grinds to reach the goal he truly desire with pure heart,” adding “Since he never gave up on his dreams and continued forward, that makes him strong.”
When asked about the reason for the rock music throughout the movie, director stated “In my opinion the music that perfectly portrays the relationship between the rebellious mindset of the underdog is rock music.”
The Musical movie “Inu-Oh” originates from a old novel “Tale of the Heike.”
According to the director he followed the overlaying theme and the structures of the original story, however, there were no details about the performances therefore he put a lot of effort into creating and showcasing these performances.
Within the musical animation “Inu-Oh” it withholds the idea of craving for artistic freedom, love and importance of those around one, and more.
As Inu-oh and Tomona gains fame, the leading party does not look at them with a positive manner. As the pressure tightens up Inu-Oh kneels down and takes the faith however Tomona fights and continues on with his journey, therefore both of the characters end up in very different ending.
“I have not put in a lot of super details where one needs to watch the movie multiple times to catch,” adding “therefore despite of it being a music movie which will provide various insight as one watch multiple time, I hope those who watch the movie without trying too hard to find everything that is hidden throughout the movie.” addressed director Yuasa
Director Yuasa is known for his movie “Lu Over the Wall” in 2017 which was granted with the grand prize of Annecy International Animated Film Festival” awarding Yuasa with the title of post Miyazaki Hayao.
“Inu-Oh” will premiere on December 8.
