SEOUL, July 9 (Yonhap) -- Three years after Lee Jae-sung advanced to European football, the South Korean footballer has finally stepped on board to the German football league, The Bundesliga.
Mainz officially announced on its website on Friday that the 28-year-old player has signed a three-year contract with the team until June 2024.
After leaving Korea's Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in 2018, Lee moved to Holstein Kiel in the second division of Bundesliga and scored 23 goals and 25 assists in 104 games during three seasons.
When Lee's contract with Kiel expired last month, the footballer finally joined Mainz, which have had players Cha Du-ri, Koo Ja-cheol, Park Joo-ho and Ji Dong-won on the team in the past.
The Bundesliga posted a video which showed the team picking Lee Jae-sung from Frankfurt Airport along with the message "Welcome to Mainz 05, Lee Jae-sung" on the club's Twitter account. Lee Jae-sung also took a commemorative photo with a muffler given by the club around his neck.
"His qualities as a player make him a real asset to our team," said sporting director Christian Heidel. "He is very intelligent, moves well between the lines as an offensive player and gets into the box. He's also a tireless, strong pressing player and it passionate in the tackle. We are very happy that he is at Mainz."
Lee Jae-sung also said, "This is where my dream of playing in the Bundesliga is coming true. I had good conversations with the coach and of course I followed the great second half of Mainz last season. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the Mainz fans."
