SEOUL, Sept. 17 (Yonhap) -- "My artist became a criminal one day."
Documentary film "Fanatic" is a consolation and tribute to "failed fans" like the director who was a long-time fan of singer Jung Joon-young, who was sentenced to six years in prison for sexual crimes.
Director's teenage years were full of Jung Joon-young. She went to Seoul by train for the first time to see him, and to stand out, She wore Hanbok at every fan signing event. She even appeared on the show wearing a name tag "Jun-young's fan."
She was ashamed of her past because she was a "Successful fan" who was remembered by the singer. She was not only deeply hurt that her favorite singer caused such crime, but also felt guilty that her support and love for him could have been the driving force behind the singer's crime.
The same goes for fans who have had similar experiences. Fans who once supported singers Seungri, Kang In, and Jung Bobby and have experienced the fall of their idols are all confused whether they are victims or perpetrators.
The defense mechanism that the idol they liked was different from now, the reproach of 'Did not know the true nature,' and the wandering between beautiful memories and shabby reality. The movie depicted story that is easily relatable for anyone who has been greatly disappointed by their idols in a lighter mood.
The scene of "Goods Funeral," where the items that have been collected are displayed beautifully and fans hand over chrysanthemums and candles, is whether sad than funny. The scene where they talk with a reporter who first reported Joon-young's alleged sex crimes is somewhat warm.
Movie is also interesting as it did not just capture young female fans. The director expanded the scope of the work by filming mother who was once a fan of the late actor Cho Min-ki and the "Taegukgi Unit," a passionate supporter of former President Park Geun Hye.
The appearance of friends who said "I don't think I can become fan of another artists" liking someone again raises fundamental questions such as where do the love and passion for someone come from and what do they mean.
Director Oh Se-yeon came to the stage ahead of the premiere and said, "Maybe I started this reckless journey because I wanted to know what loving something means," adding, "I hope you guys watch the movie and think about the person you like and the act of liking someone."
The movie will be released on Sept. 28.
