3 actresses excited to share 1 character in Netflix's 'Mask Girl'
SEOUL, Aug. 16 (Yonhap) -- Netflix's original series “Mask Girl” has much to do with number “3” -- three names, three
lifetimes, three events, and three lead actors.
South
Korean veteran actress Go Hyun-jung joined hands with rookie actress Lee
Han-byeol and former After School member Nana, to portray a single character
with three faces -- ordinary office worker Kim Mo-mi, showgirl Ah-reum, and
convict No. 1047.
During
Mask Girl’s media conference on Wednesday, Go said, "One actor playing one
character may seem conventional. But I think dividing a single character into multiple
roles can make the show even more absorbing."
Based on
a webtoon of the same name, Mask Girl follows the life of Kim Mo-mi, an ordinary
office worker Kim Mo-mi with appearance-related insecurities. She wears a mask
at night and becomes an internet broadcast BJ (streamer), eventually becoming a
murderer through a series of events.
Lee plays
Kim Mo-mi, an ordinary office worker who engages in BJ activities under the
pseudonym “Mask Girl.” Nana takes after the role of Kim Mo-mi, who transforms
into the showgirl Ah-reum after undergoing extensive plastic surgery. Go
portrays Kim Mo-mi, who becomes prisoner number 1047 after committing a murder.
In the
media event, Lee said she acted out her character with a heavy heart. She said,
"After reading the script, I felt a sense of empathy towards the anxiety
and deficiencies that Kim Mo-mi experiences. I tried to portray her with a
mixture of sorrow and admiration, looking at the flower that blooms in
hard-to-reach places."
Nana also
faced much challenges. "I tried my best to understand and empathize with
Kim Mo-mi, who leads an unfortunate life. While reading (webtoon) Mask Girl, I
found myself pondering what constitutes right choices, reflecting on many dilemmas
we face."
Go
said, "I tried to minimize my acting cliches that viewers have become familiar
with, and present myself as Kim Mo-mi, a fresh character to the viewers’ eye.”
Besides
the troika, actor Ahn Jae-hong plays Kim Mo-mi's colleague and BJ Mask Girl's
fan, Joo Oh-nam. Yum Hye-ran takes on the role of Kim Kyung-ja, a mother
consumed by vengeance after losing her only son, Joo Oh-nam.
Directed
by Kim Yong-hoon, known for the film “Beasts Clawing at Straws,” the drama
aimed to capture the essence of the extensive original story in a condensed
form, thus transforming it into a narrative with various characters'
perspectives.
All 7 episodes
of Mask Girl will be released simultaneously on Netflix on Friday.
