SEOUL, Sept. 3 (Yonhap) -- "Maybe because I had become Yoon-seok, even just holding hands made my heart flutter," actor Gong Myoung said as he recalled filming the Netflix film "Love Untangled."

The film, released on Friday, is a coming-of-age romance set in 1998 in Busan. It follows 19-year-old Park Se-ri (Shin Eun-soo), who struggles with her unruly curly hair while preparing for the biggest confession of her life to popular classmate Kim Hyun (Cha Woo-min). Things take a turn when she crosses paths with transfer student Han Yoon-seok (Gong Myoung).

Meeting with reporters in Seoul on Wednesday, Gong said he sympathized with Yoon-seok’s feelings when he dropped Se-ri off at her home.

"When he says, ‘I want to see you longer,’ that lingering emotion really hit me," he said.

He added the hand-holding and skinship scene at Se-ri’s doorstep was one of the hardest to shoot. "I wanted viewers to truly feel fluttered, so I thought hard about how to express it. Even before filming, I felt that scene was the core of Se-ri and Yoon-seok’s relationship."

Yoon-seok is portrayed as a more reserved character, having moved from Seoul to Busan with his mother, Baek Jang-mi (Hong Eun-hee), while carrying an untold family story. Gong said he even cried during a preview screening when immersing himself in a scene where Yoon-seok sees his mother hospitalized after a trip to Seoul.

"It was heartbreaking to see her bruised all over. I cried not because of my acting itself, but because I was fully immersed in Yoon-seok’s situation."

Since completing his military service in 2023, Gong has been actively expanding his career. This year alone, he has appeared in four works: the film "Love Untangled" and the dramas "One Week Before I Die," "Please Stop Drinking," and "Square."

"After discharge, I wanted to take on many projects and show different characters," he said. "In that sense, I am grateful."

He also described "Love Untangled" as a project that captured his own youth.

"Except for the ending, I wore a school uniform throughout. In that sense, the film shows Gong Myoung’s own youth. Han Yoon-seok is probably the freshest and most youthful character in my filmography."

Gong dismissed concerns about overexposure from his busy schedule.

"I don’t think audiences are tired of me yet," he said with a laugh. "The more I do, the better. I believe taking on diverse characters and genres is what builds me as an actor. From that perspective, I think now is the time to do even more."
