SEOUL, April 26 (Yonhap) -- Actress Youn Yuh-jung, who gave a memorable performance as Soon-ja in the film, "Minari," became the first Korean to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The actress also gained attention through her charming acceptance speech on the 25th (KST).
Here is the full text of what she said:
"Mr. Brad Pitt, finally. Nice to meet you. Where were you while we were filming? It's a great honor to meet you."
"As you know, I'm from Korea and actually my name is Yuh-jung Youn and most of European people call me Yuh-yung and most of them call me Yoo-jung, but tonight you are all forgiven."
"When I'm living in the other part of the world, I watched the Oscar event on television like a television program for us. Me being here by myself, I cannot believe I'm here. Ok, let me pull myself together. Thank you. Tremendous thanks to the Academy members who voted for me. Thank you to the wonderful "Minari" family: Steven [Yeun], [Lee} Isaac [Chung], [Han] Ye-ri, Noel [Kate Cho], and Alan [Kim], we became a family. And most of all--above all--Lee Isaac Chung, without him, I wouldn't be here tonight. He was our captain and my director, so thanks to you."
"Well, see, I don't believe in competition. How can I win over Glenn Close? I've been watching her so many performances. All the nominees--five nominees--we are the winners for different movies and different roles. So we can't compete with each other."
"Tonight I'm here because I have just a little bit [of] luck, I think. Maybe I'm luckier than you. Maybe it is the American hospitality for the Korean actor? I'm not sure but anyway thank you so much."
"I'd like to thank my two boys, who made me go out and work. So, [my] beloved sons, this is the result because mommy work so hard. And I'd like to dedicate this award to my first director--Kim Ki-young, who was [a] very genius director that I made a movie together with--my first movie. I think he would be very happy if he was still alive. Thank you very much. Tremendous thank you to everybody."
