E-sports Championships East Asia 2021 & Game Culture Festival to be held in Seoul

SEOUL, Sept. 9 (Yonhap) -- The first e-sports national competition "E-sports Championships East Asia 2021 & Game Culture Festival," led by the government, will be held in Seoul on Sept. 10-12.

Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Esports Championships East Asia Seoul 2021, Korea e-Sports Association, and Korea Creative Content Agency, the competition will be held at SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium in Seoul.

In efforts to prevent the widespread of the coronavirus, the competition will be broadcast live through Naver Sports TV, the official YouTube channel, and American video streaming service Twitch. In China and Japan, the championship will be broadcast in real time through the country's respective channels.

During the Trilateral Cultural Content Industry Forum held in 2019, South Korea, China, and Japan agreed to hold an e-sports competition and signed a business agreement between the three countries' e-sports associations to support the competition.

The official events of the first competition include "League of Legends," "PlayerUnknown's Battleground," "Clash Royale," and "PES 2021" while computer game "Dungeon Fighter Online' will be will be the demonstration event. There will be 43 athletes from each country, including the coach, and a total of 130 players will participate.

In addition, the "Game Culture Festival" will be held online. The festival will spread various game culture through programs such as game soundtrack performances, arcade game experiences, and lectures on game culture.

Culture Minister Hwang Hee said, "I hope that the first e-sports championships held in South Korea will present the standards of international e-sports competitions and promote the status of Korean games as well as e-sports."
