SEOUL, Sep. 16 (Yonhap) -- World Taekwondo (WT) Demonstration Team made into the finals in “America’s Got Talent,” America’s popular NBC audition program, but couldn’t make it to victory.
But the demonstration team sure has ‘demonstrated’ the excellence of taekwondo to the U.S. through their great journey.
As a result of the watchers’ votes, the team failed to make it to top 5 out of the 10 teams who advanced to the finals that was held live on the 16th (KST) in the Dolby Theater in Hollywood Los Angeles California where the Academy Awards usually take place.
For the finals, the Demonstration Team appeared 5th of the 10 teams and once again caught the judges and the audience’s eyes performing their biggest strengths, acrobatics and pine board slicing.
The Demonstration Team advanced to the finals for “Italy’s Got Talent” in January, receiving the Golden Buzzer. Seeing their video, the officials of “America’s Got Talent” repetitively asked for the teams’ participation in their program and the team applied for the audition in spring.
The team, composed of Captain Na Ill-han, director Seo Mi-sook, 17 crews from Korea and 9 crews who joined them in America, has been competing in the U.S. for from the quarter-finals in the middle of last month and has succeeded in reaching the finals.
“Through the Demonstration Team’s participation, we have showed that taekwondo is more than a martial arts sports. It is a sport that delivers peace and hope and that delivers dream and hope to youngsters around the world going through hard times due to wars and disasters,” said WT although they did not achieve victory.
“America’s Got Talent” is America’s most popular large-scale audition program and with the recent finals, has closed its 16th season.
This season’s winner was Dustin Tavella who astounded the audiences with magic and received a million dollars (about 1.17 billion won) of prize money.
