SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Yonhap) -- Actor Cho Woo-jin described his upcoming film “Boss” as “a feast of characters, like a Chuseok holiday table filled with abundant dishes,” during a production briefing held at Megabox Seongsu in Seoul on Monday.

The comedy action film, directed by Ra Hee-chan, follows the chaos that unfolds when the leadership position of the once-powerful gang “Sikgu-pa” suddenly becomes vacant and prominent members start yielding the seat of boss to one another.

Cho plays Soon-tae, the gang’s No. 2 and a Chinese restaurant chef. He said he drew inspiration from Jackie Chan films for his action scenes, adding, “We tried to create action that is both comedic and impactful.” To prepare for his role, he trained in basic cooking skills with chefs Yeo Kyung-rae and Park Eun-young.

Jung Kyung-ho portrays Kang-pyo, a former gang member who, after serving time in prison, becomes obsessed with tango. The actor practiced tango intensively for three to four months and credited his girlfriend, Girls’ Generation member Sooyoung, for her help. “I filmed my dance practices and sent them to her for feedback,” he said. Jung added that he immediately agreed to join the project upon hearing that Cho, Park Ji-hwan, and Lee Kyu-hyung were also on board.

Lee Kyu-hyung plays Tae-gyu, an undercover cop who has infiltrated the gang for 10 years, describing his character as in line with those in “Infernal Affairs” (2003), “The Departed” (2006), and “New World” (2013). He said the film offers bold and entertaining action alongside comedy fit for the Chuseok holiday.

Park Ji-hwan takes on the role of Pan-ho, the only member eager to become boss despite his shortcomings. He said the story, while rough on the surface, portrays relationships in a “charming and heartwarming way,” making it a film for families to laugh over together during the holiday.

Cho jokingly compared the chemistry of the four lead actors to a “fortysomething version of boy group Lion Boys” from the fantasy film “K-pop Demon Hunters.”

“Boss” is set for release during the Chuseok holiday in October.
