SEOUL, Feb. 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korean veteran actor Choi Soo-jong, 61, who has received worldwide recognition for his leading roles in several highly successful period televisions series, will be returning to the small screens with a new KBS period drama for the first time in 10 years.
Choi will play Gang Gam-chan, the medieval Korean government official and military commander during the early days of Goryeo Dynasty, in the television series “Goryeo-Khitan War” that will be produced in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the national broadcasting company.
The upcoming period drama will tell the story of King Hyeonjong of Goryeo, who brought the country together with the leadership of tolerance, and General Gang Gam-chan, who served as the King’s mentor and commander-in-chief of the Goryeo military.
It will depict the perfect victory of General Gang, who fought at the forefront during the Battle of Guizhou, which finally brought an end to the 26-year-old battle between the new Goryeo Dynasty and the Khitan Empire, the mightiest empire of the time.
The television series will see Choi as Gang, a 70-year-old civil official who won the trust of King Hyeonjong, the eighth king of Goryeo, and heroically led the battle on which the country’s sake depended to victory.
The “Goryeo-Khitan War” has been drawing attention as it will be starring Choi, who led the heyday of KBS’s legendary period television series by taking the leading roles in “Dream of the Emperor” (2012-2013), “Dae Jo-yeong” (2006-2007), “Emperor of the Sea” (2004-2005), and “Taejo Wang Geon” (2000-2002).
Director Jeon Woo-sung, who is known to have previously delivered “Your House Helper” and “Strongest Deliveryman,” will be joining hands with producer Kim Han-sol, who worked with Choi for the television series “Imjin War 1952,” for the upcoming drama. The script is written by screenwriter Lee Jung-woo, who wrote scripts for the historical dramas “The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won” and “Gunman in Joseon,” as well as the rom-com “The Strongest Deliveryman.”
“Goryeo-Khitan War” is scheduled to premiere in the second half of this year.
