'Special Exhibition of Literature' to kick off on Dec. 22

SEOUL, Dec. 14 (Yonhap) -- Leading works of Korean Modern writers who worked around the Inwangsan Mountain area near Cheongwadae, or the Blue House, will be displayed at the Chunchugwan, which was the office for recording history in the Joseon dynasty.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on Wednesday that it will hold a special literary exhibition "Yi Sang, Yeom Sang-seop, Hyun Jin-geon, Yoon Dong-ju, Wander Cheong Wa Dae" (translated) at the Chunchugwan of Cheong Wa Dae from Nov. 22 to Dec.16.

This the second time that the exhibition will be held at the Chunchugwan after the special exhibition of disabled artists took place in September.

Near Cheong Wa Dae, Bukaksan Mountain and Inwangsan Mountain, Gyeongbokgung Palace and Seochon area have been the main background of art since old days, and have been the base for many writers. Yi Sang, Yeom Sang-seop, Hyun Jin-gun, and Yoon Dong-ju also created their leading works here.

The special exhibition will be composed of five parts.

Born in Chebu-dong, Jongno district, Yeom Sang-seop presented works like "Three Generations" that project the consciousness of middle-class in Seoul. Along with "Sunflower" and cover of "Three Generations," Cover illustration of "Gyeon-woo-hwa" drawn by Na Hye-seok who Yeom had built a friendship while studying in Japan will be displayed.

The representative writer of 1920s, Hyun Jin-geon was imprisoned for the Erasure of Japanese National Flag when he was working as a reporter for the Dong-A Ilbo, and then he settled in Buam-dong, where he wrote "Muyeong Top" and "Heukchi Sangji." You can meet the cover of "Muyoung Tower," and the cover of "The Dawn of Civilization" (translated) which includes "A society that recommends drinking," (translated) and "One Lucky Day."

The "genius poet" Yi Sang lived in the house of his uncle in Tongin-dong, Jongno district for most of his life, and this place is currently open as the "Yi Sang House" memorial hall. His main work and which he drew the illustration, "The Wings" along with cover of Park Tae-won's "A Day in the Life of Mr.Gubo, Novelist" which has the Yi Sang's illustration will be exhibited.

Yoon Dong-ju housed at the novelist Kim Song's house in Nusang-dong when he was a student at Yeonhui College, and this place remains as "Yoon Dong-ju's boarding house." During this period, Yoon Dong-ju wrote 18 poems and made "Heaven, Wind, Stars, and Poems." The following work's cover along with Baek Seok's "Deer," which is known to have been liked by Yoon, will be displayed.

Covers of literary works by artists who worked near the Blue House will also be exhibited.

Moon Jung-hee, the director of the National Museum of Korean Literature, said, "The area around Inwangsan Mountain is the main cradle of modern Korean literature," adding, "We hope that the exhibition will allow visitors to feel the literary atmosphere and creativity of modern artists."

During the exhibition period, a professional guide (Docent) will provide commentary on the works every day, and a photo zone will be set.

For those who have difficulty visiting the site, "360 Virtual Reality (VR) video" will be released on the website (www.nmkl.or.kr) of National Museum of Korean Literature and voice support services for the visually impaired people will be provided.
