SEOUL, Feb. 16(Yonhap) -- The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on Feb. 16 that it has selected Hanbok, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Daejanggyeong, Baekje Historic Areas, and Korean royal court cuisine and rice cake from the Joseon Dynasty as “This year's representative Cultural Heritage.”

Hanbok, which was over controversy as it was worn by a woman who appeared at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, is Korea's traditional clothes, and Gyeongbokgung Palace is the central palace of the Joseon Dynasty.

Tripitaka Koreana, also known as Palman Daejanggyeong, is a Buddhist scripture wooden printing block created to prevent external invasion during the Goryeo Dynasty, and UNESCO World Heritage Baekje Historic Areas refer to the Baekje remains in Gongju, Buyeo, and Iksan. Korean royal court cuisine food and rice cake from the Joseon Dynasty are each International Cultural Heritage.

The representative Cultural Heritage was determined through a survey of each 1,000 people from foreigners and Koreans living in Korea from September to December in 2021.

The foreigners selected 10 out of 57 nominees, and Koreans selected 5 out of 10. According to a survey of Koreans, Hanbok ranked 1st with 28.8%, and Gyeongbokgung Palace ranked 2nd with 15.3%.

The Cultural Heritage Administration will devise a plan to promote representative Cultural Heritage and publicize them in various ways, including social networking service.

The selection of “This year's representative Cultural Heritage” began last year. Last year, there were four items, such as Kimchi making, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, Changdeokgung Palace, and Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes.

The staff from the Cultural Heritage Administration said, "We will respond to the cultural process of surrounding countries by selecting the representative Cultural Heritages and continue to introduce our culture at home and abroad."
