SEOUL, July 24 (Yonhap) -- The “Lore Olympus” which Naver Webtoon picked up from the North American armature comic website "Canvas", was recently awarded with Eisner Award which is considered to be the Oscar of the web comic’s world.
According to the web page of “San Diego Comicon International”, Rachel Smythe’s ”Lore Olympus” has been selected as the Eisner Award Winner for Best Web comic on Sunday.
Web comic section which selects the best comic released through online platforms within the given time period of a single year, “Lore Olympus” was the first vertically scrollable web comic to have won the award.
Author Rachel Smythe, gave out a speech during the award ceremony to show her gratitude by saying “I would like to send my gratitude to my fans from all over the world.” adding “I couldn’t be more excited to receive this incredible award, and am honored to be the first web comic creator to accomplish this achievement,” said Rachel Smythe. “‘Lore Olympus’ has been life-changing for me, and I am so proud to share this story with Web comic’s global community.”
Nominee, Navillera by HUN and Jimin was unfortunate with the result.
Web comic, “Lore Olympus” is a remake of Greek god Hades, and goddess Proserpina’s story with hint of romance, healing, growth and more added to it.
“Lore Olympus” distinguished itself from the other web comics from the armature web comics’ platform “Canvas”, starting in 2018 “Lore Olympus” started to serialize in the English version of Naver Webtoon, “Webtoon.” Currently “Lore Olympus” is one of the global representative works of Naver Webtoon, accumulating over 1.2billion recorded hits.
Along with drawing a lot of attention and getting positive feed backs from the global readers, “Lore Olympus” is setting series of award winning records. “Lore Olympus” received the “Harvey award” which was created in 1988 to commemorate famous American cartoonist and the editor, Harvey Kurtzman, under the digital book of the year.
Kim Hyung-Il the leader of Northern American Business sector of Naver Webtoon stated “’Lore Olympus’ is a stylish and immersive contemporary retelling of mythological lore that has accumulated over 1.2 billion global views” adding “I am glad that my effort to introduce Korean web comic to American web comic market has been rewarded in a form of Eisener Award, therefore I am very happy.”
The Eisner Award originates from Will Eisner, who is considered to be the pioneer of the American cartoon industry, the first ever Eisner Award was given out in 1988. The Eisner Award is known for its fame and honor, also it is considered to be the Oscar of the cartoon industry.
In 2014 Eisner award introduced a new segment Digital and Web comic, following in 2017 web comics have been evaluated separately.
